Fallen

As a dyed in thw wool music fan, it’s always sad to hear of the death of a musical hero.

Last night as I was getting home, the news broke that Pete Shelly of Buzzcocks had died of a heart attack.

It seems apt to mention this here for two reasons.

Firstly there’s probably

their best known track, Ever fallen in love (with someone you shouldn’t’ve), the lyrics of which seem particularly apt in my current circumstances …

You spurn my natural emotions
You make me feel I’m dirt and I’m hurt
And if I start a commotion
I run the risk of losing you and that’s worse
Ever fallen in love with someone
Ever fallen in love, in love with someone
Ever fallen in love, in love with someone
You shouldn’t have fallen in love with?
I can’t see much of a future
Unless we find out what’s to blame, what a shame
And we won’t be together much longer
Unless we realize that we are the same
Ever fallen in love with someone
Ever fallen in love, in love with someone
Ever fallen in love, in love with someone
You shouldn’t have fallen in love with

And then there’s their name.

Sadly the story that they were named after a vibrator is (according to Wikipedia at least) not true. But put that possibility next to some of their piers -The Vibrators, The Slits, Penetration, The Sex Pistols, The 4 Skins, Throbbing Gristle – and it’s not difficult to think it might have been.

Rest in peace Pete.
